African Singer Bringing World Music to Wisconsin Lutheran’s Schwan Hall
By MARY-LIZ SHAW
Kaissa, a singer originally from Cameroon, comes to Wisconsin Lutheran’s Schwan Concert Hall Tuesday for a single evening performance.
Kaissa’s vocal style, crisp, tight band and talented array of backup singers make for an arresting show.
She has a unique talent, a clear and powerful voice that can be soft without sounding weak, and strong without sounding forced or out of tune. Her music has elements of jazz, reggae, African pop and old blues.
Kaissa honed her talent in Paris, where she grew up amid a thriving world music scene.
She now lives in New York, where she has done backing vocals for several artists, including Diana Ross and Jean-Michel Jarre. With the release of her own CD, “Looking There,” Kaissa has become a favorite among world music aficionados. One enthusiastic listener wrote to CD Baby, the online CD sales site, that Kaissa has a “blessed voice that calms my soul.”
You can watch a short compilation video, with excerpts from three of her songs, at her Web site, www.kaissa.com.
Her show is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Schwan Concert Hall, 8815 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Tickets are $25 general, $22 seniors, $10 for students. For more information, call (414) 443-8802 or see www.wlc.edu/arts.
