Module Adds Ethernet, Bluetooth and Analog I/O to Popular Memec Spartan-3 LC Board
Memec, a leading global semiconductor distributor specializing in demand creation, today released the P160 Communications Module 3 development kit. A small, low-cost daughter card form-factor, the kit enables designers to add a standard set of processor peripherals and bulk memory to any P160 compatible system board. The Communications Module 3 is targeted at Spartan-based MicroBlaze(TM) designs, but can also be used on the Xilinx Virtex-II Pro and Virtex-4 platforms.
The P160 module boasts an on-board 10/100 Ethernet MAC and PHY chip, LAN91C111, from SMSC, which eliminates the need for a fabric-based MAC in the FPGA and frees resources in smaller density FPGAs. In addition, an 8-channel, 14-bit 48 Ksps analog-to-digital converter provides analog signal input capabilities, while a 2-channel, 12-bit 3us digital-to-analog converter provides analog output signals. As a result, the P160 Communications Module 3 is ideal for industrial control and instrumentation applications.
"The development kit's unique combination of user interfaces and Flash/SRAM memory simplifies application development and helps designers quickly and effectively meet time-to-market requirements," said Jim Beneke, director of technical marketing for Memec. "While the P160 Communications Module 3 is useful for many processor-based applications, it is an ideal solution for Xilinx embedded MicroBlaze systems and a great daughter card for the Memec Spartan-3 LC board."
The Memec P160 Communications Module 3 contains 1Mx32 Flash and 256Kx32 high-speed SRAM (10 ns) for code and data storage in processor-based applications. The kit also features a simple 3-bit VGA interface (RGB), real-time clock (RTC) and easy-to-use Bluetooth module, which allows for easy setup of serial port style links.
Available from Memec Insight, a demand creation division of Memec, the P160 Communications Module 3 is low-cost and versatile. Customers can order the new module, part number DS-KIT-P160-COMM3, for $225 by calling Memec Insight at 800-677-7715 or visiting http://www.memec.com/p160.
