Tokyo, Jan. 21 (Jiji Press)–Softbank Mobile Corp. said Monday it will introduce special discounts for students attending educational institutions from elementary schools to universities on Feb. 1, aiming to grab a greater market share in an age segment where the company has fallen behind.

Eligible new subscribers will be exempted from the basic monthly fees of 980 yen for the initial three years, while the minimum fixed monthly fees for data communications will be lowered to zero yen from the current 1,029-4,410 yen.

Softbank Mobile will also open a special portal site for student subscribers on March 1 to offer 12,000 content titles including games free of charge.

Softbank Mobile lags far behind KDDI Corp. in the mobile phone service market for students. President Masayoshi Son said the company will take the offense to turn the tide.END
