Caltech Selects Ciena to Support Its Network Linking at CERN Laboratory

Posted on: Wednesday, 23 January 2008, 06:00 CST

Ciena Corporation, a networking specialist, has announced that the California Institute of Technology has selected its CoreDirector multiservice optical switch for use in its multi-national research networking efforts.

The US LHCNet network interconnects the CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland with access points in Amsterdam, New York and Chicago, Illinois. Onward connections to research facilities throughout the US involve the US Department of Energy (DEO)'s Energy Sciences Network's Science Data Network, the internet network and National Lambda Rail.

The company has claimed that with its CoreDirector platform, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) can set up and manage the transfer of multiple terabytes of data from CERN to the Fermilab and Brookhaven DOE laboratories.

Steve Alexander, chief technology officer at Ciena, said: "Given the support CoreDirector provides for dynamic provisioning of high-bandwidth connectivity, it is ideal for enabling research initiatives between geographically separate locations in support of high performance computing and networking applications."
