PM Gordon Brown has ordered a pounds 50,000 cap in campaign spending for Labour leadership elections.

The move follows Thursday’s resignation of Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain after cops were called in to probe pounds 100,000 of undeclared donations.

Labour’s deputy leader Harriet Harman will put the cash cap proposal before the party’s national executive this week.

An insider said: “Both Harriet and Gordon feel the party spends too much on its internal elections.

“This would be a sensible figure and would end massive fund- raising.”

Meanwhile the PM will tomorrow promise 300,000 jobs for youngsters prepared to train – and docked benefits if they don’t

He will tell the BBC today: “If you don’t get skills you won’t get a job. If you do you’ll earn a lot of money.”
