Illinois Municipal Broadband Communications Association Signs Agreement to Utilize Dark Fiber Along Illinois State Toll Highway Authority Right of Way

Posted on: Monday, 31 January 2005, 09:00 CST

OMAHA, Neb., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Adesta, LLC, a multi-discipline infrastructure provider and integrator, today announced that the Illinois Municipal Broadband Communications Association (IMBCA) signed an agreement to utilize dark fiber along the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority (ISTHA) right of way (ROW) to provide ultra fast internet connectivity to several of its member cities. The IMBCA is a non-profit group of communities and others that was formed to share information and resources to provide broadband services to their communities. Like other areas of the nation, these communities have felt the effects of the economic downturn, the closing of manufacturing facilities and the outsourcing of jobs. They see the development of a broadband network as a step towards keeping the businesses they have and attracting new business to their communities. Adesta LLC will provide engineering, construction and maintenance services for individual members of the IMBCA to connect to the ISTHA ROW.

"Adesta is proud to be a part of the IMBCA project," said Bob Sommerfeld, President of Adesta. "We firmly believe that along with the development of broadband networks, there is a strong need to provide connectivity between the cities and ultimately to a point of presence where multiple carriers can provide choice and competitive pricing. This is a prime example of municipal utilities once again taking the lead and providing an additional and vital service to their communities."

"Portions of the network will be up and running in early January and the balance shortly thereafter," said IMBCA President Randy Wielgos. "We see the signing of the contract with ISTHA as being the first step in the creation of a fiber optic backbone that will provide high-speed internet service to our cities and hope to see it expand rapidly first in Northern Illinois and then to other areas of the State. We've been most appreciative of both ISTHA and Adesta working closely with us to get to this day."

The first section of the network will run from Rock Falls, IL to Naperville, IL, a distance of about 82 miles. Initial laterals are being done for Rock Falls, Rochelle and Batavia. The IMBCA network plans to connect to several other initiatives that are either underway or being planned.

The network is the first step in a long-range plan to provide connectivity amongst all of the members of the IMBCA, other communities and educational institutions within Illinois. The IMBCA network has plans to grow along other ROW to connect cities such as Rockford, Bloomington, Peoria, Freeport, Princeton and Galesburg. Once on the network, access via fiber creates virtually unlimited bandwidth for education, medical initiatives and high- speed data transfer. The fiber will link rural areas with high-tech telecom services in urban areas and help to revitalize regions that have suffered high unemployment and act as an economic stimulus to the area.
