BEIJING, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced that it has signed CDMA mobile network expansion contracts valued at more than $230 million with China Unicom. Under these agreements, part of the initial stage of China Unicom's phase III expansion, Lucent will supply CDMA2000(R) equipment to China Unicom's subsidiaries in six provinces including Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Shandong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Guangdong.

The contracts demonstrate the continued collaboration between China Unicom and Lucent Technologies. With this expansion, China Unicom will significantly improve the capacity and coverage of its network, enhancing network quality. China Unicom also will be able to deliver a variety of value-added data services such as video-on-demand, live streaming video and high-speed mobile Internet access to its subscribers.

"We are very honored that China Unicom has selected Lucent Technologies as a supplier for its Phase III expansion," said Jim Brewington, president of Lucent Technologies' Mobility Solutions Group. "These new agreements reflect the strength of our mobile networking solutions, and our relentless commitment to helping China Unicom deliver best-in-class services to its customers."

"These new agreements further demonstrate Lucent's leadership in CDMA, both in China and worldwide," said Jason Chi, chairman and president of Lucent Technologies China. "China Unicom's selection of Lucent as a partner also highlights the important role Lucent plays in the telecommunications market in China, and the outstanding relationship we have with this very important customer."

Backed by Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies is the global market leader in the development and deployment of CDMA networks, having deployed more than 80,000 spread-spectrum CDMA base stations worldwide, of which more than 40,000 are supporting 3G services.

"As the basis of the primary 3G mobile communication standards, CDMA spread-spectrum technology is playing an increasingly important role in the telecommunications market in China," said Mary Chan, president of mobility research and development for Lucent.
