Dell Innovates to Positively Impact Corporate Desktop Customers, Environment; New Industrial Design Enhances Usability, Serviceability

Posted on: Tuesday, 1 February 2005, 12:00 CST

Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) has reinvented the world's top-selling corporate desktop computers(a) with a new, environmentally friendly design that improves usability and serviceability and takes an important step towards helping to reduce lead in corporate desktop systems.

In addition to compliance with several international environmental design standards, Dell plans to meet specifications for the European Union's (EU) Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive before the July 2006 deadline. The RoHS directive requires that manufacturers of electronics products shipped in the EU eliminate or minimize several chemical compounds, including lead. The Dell(TM) OptiPlex(TM) GX280 chassis are designed to accommodate future RoHS-compliant platforms.

Based on customer feedback, the new Dell-designed OptiPlex GX280 desktop and mini-tower chassis also incorporate new features that improve usability. The systems feature Dell DirectDetect(TM), a diagnostic tool that identifies system status. Four LED indicator lights located on the front of the system help IT support personnel quickly diagnose more than 24 different hardware problems. Quick diagnosis of system issues helps reduce downtime and total cost of ownership. In addition, network, hard drive and power indicator lights are located on the front for easy reference.

"The new OptiPlex GX280 chassis are examples of Dell innovating for the good of customers and the environment," said John Medica, senior vice president, Dell Product Group. "We have made it easier for customers to use and service the systems while maintaining quality and reliability and meeting our commitment to high environmental standards across the globe."

The new systems allow tool-less access to internal components enabling customers to service their systems easily. Two USB ports located on the front of the system are spaced far enough apart to accommodate side-by-side installation of devices. The port access door of previous OptiPlex systems is removed making the USB ports easier to access. Enhanced tool-less features include color-coded release levers to identify, service and upgrade components including hard drives, optical drives and graphics and networking cards.

The new OptiPlex chassis design includes thermal-management enhancements using Dell HyperCool(TM) technology. This provides maximum computing power with minimum fan noise and reliable operation. HyperCool, used in Dell notebooks, and the integration of Intel Balanced Technology Extended (BTX) design specifications allow the systems to operate at lower temperatures. Lower internal temperatures reduce the likelihood of system failure.

The new chassis also include more durable power supplies that offer brown-out/blackout circuitry and line-surge protection in case of electrical irregularities. Also included is a variable speed fan that is designed to cool the power supply with less power and noise.

Technical Specifications for the OptiPlex GX280:

-- Available in either a desktop or mini-tower form factor

-- Intel Pentium(R) 4 and Celeron(TM) D processors

-- 256MB-4GB(b) of DDR2 400MHz or 533MHz RAM shared(c) memory
