Hop-on Develops Phone Use for Upcoming Microsoft Bid on Yahoo!
Posted on: Monday, 4 February 2008, 15:00 CST
Hop-on, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: HPNN). Microsoft's bid for Yahoo! aims at Google, which is aggressively targeting the mobile space.
Hop-on has been working on developing a phone for the Google network since Google announced it is targeting mobile content and offerings, with its Open Handset Alliance open-source mobile platform and a bid for wireless spectrum in the FCC's on-going auction.
In November, Google joined the roster of qualified bidders in the 700-MHz-spectrum auction, and is one of a handful of companies with the deep pockets needed to bid for a nationwide license.
"Our phone is run on a Unix platform, but is easily converted to work on a Microsoft platform since we are familiar with Microsoft software," says Peter Michaels, President of Hop-on.
The Hop-on PDA phone can be changed to operate on a different frequency spectrum. If Microsoft-Yahoo is to compete with Google, Hop-on has three phones in its line-up that would work for them. As an American manufacturing company that, like everyone else, builds their phones in China, Hop-on can quickly produce all the phones the consumer demands.
Google plans to release its own open mobile platforms, with Android Linux-based device operating system and its Open Handset Alliance, a conglomeration of over 30 companies that hope to develop lower cost, open mobile devices. Verizon, AT&T and Google's new strategies signal a shift in open thinking that other communication companies are bound to follow, which will prove to be beneficial for both consumers and Hop-on.
