KETTERING -- The National Composite Center announced a joint agreement with Composites One to distribute the center's Rapid Fiber Preforming technology in North America.
The partnership will help the center make the process available to a wider market.
The National Composite Center developed the technology to produce composite pickup truck boxes for the automotive industry.
The center's rapid fiber preform process uses a chopper head to spray the fiber or material needed for the composite onto a screen. The shape is then placed in a mold and injected with a liquid resin that hardens to form a solid part.
The center has improved the technology to the point where woven roll fibers, matting and hand lay-up are no longer needed to make complex shapes with carbon fibers.
"The strength of Composites One's distribution network combined with its team of knowledgeable service representatives meshes well with our unique ability to provide product development, prototyping and pilot production from concept to factory-ready products," said Lou Luedtke, the center's president and chief executive officer. "As the preform market continues to grow, NCC will be looking at licensing its manufacturing processes to other companies."
Leon Garoufalis, president and chief operating officer of Composites One, said the center's preform business fits well with the products it already offers.
Composites One, a leading distributor of fiberglass and advanced composite materials, has locations in Dayton and Ashtabula. The company has more than 8,000 customers and 500 supply partners. Its headquarters are in Arlington Heights, Ill.
