Record Label Searching for Musical Monks

A U.S. record label is searching the world for monks or other religious individuals to record an album of Gregorian chants, the BBC said Sunday.

The British broadcaster said Universal Music, based out of New York and California, are looking for monks, men of the cloth and sacred singers to help create the new album.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Gregorian chants saw a temporary musical upswing in popularity during the mid-1990s when samples of the religious singing were used by musical groups like Enigma.

Universal A&R executive Tom Lewis told the BBC his company is excited at the response it should receive from advertisements placed in numerous religious newspapers.

We are all very excited about what these adverts may unearth, Lewis said of the talent search.
