Secure Computing and Cymtec Systems Partner to Reinforce Internet Security

Posted on: Tuesday, 19 February 2008, 09:00 CST

Secure Computing Corporation (NASDAQ: SCUR), a leading enterprise gateway security provider, and Cymtec Systems, a provider of network security and performance management solutions, today announced the integration of Secure Computing's award winning SmartFilter(R) Web filtering solution with the Cymtec Sentry(R) Data Threat Protection (DTP) engine. The two security vendors have joined forces to improve network security and performance management for remote and branch office (RBO) environments.

"Market demand for comprehensive web security continues to grow as enterprises face an onslaught of Web-based threats," said Michael Osterman, President of Osterman Research. "However, traditional protection measures are no longer sufficient. With the constantly changing threat landscape it is critical that businesses look at solutions to protect them from not only known threats, but unknown threats as well. Secure Computing and Cymtec Systems remain a step ahead with their combined solution and Web 2.0 protection capabilities."

With the constantly evolving Web 2.0 environment, RBOs are faced with increasingly dynamic and sophisticated threats. Web content changes daily, with millions of people posting content to Web sites. Typically, organizations concentrate their security efforts on the core of the network -- leaving remote and branch offices vulnerable to attack.

Cymtec Sentry, combined with Secure Computing's SmartFilter Internet Filter Database, adds another level of security to solutions such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and anti-virus software. This new class of unified remote and branch office protection provides a simple, cost-effective method for stopping the uncontrolled spread of infections that get past perimeter and host defenses.

Neeraj Rajpal, CIO at international law firm Bryan Cave LLP, said, "The incorporation of Secure Computing's SmartFilter into Cymtec Sentry allows us to simplify enterprise security, with integrated active threat protection and network traffic control for our remote and branch offices. With near-zero deployment and operational costs, the combined solution provides us with enterprise-wide visibility and control along with near-automatic network protection."

Cymtec Sentry's unique DTP engine combines best-of-breed engines -- Cymtec Sentry and Secure Computing's SmartFilter -- to create a single, powerful engine that scans all traffic going through a Cymtec Sentry appliance to detect and block malicious network traffic. SmartFilter enables organizations to understand and monitor Internet use while taking effective steps to provide appropriate control over outbound Web access. It keeps the workplace free from offensive content, limits legal liability, manages bandwidth, and protects against security risks like spyware and malware.

"Web reputation is vitally important to RBO network security," said Ken Rutsky, vice president of product marketing for Secure Computing. "Integrating the SmartFilter SDK, Cymtec Sentry now provides customers with one of the industry's most complete, efficient and up-to-date reputation-based Web filtering engines."

As part of Secure Computing's vision to provide companies of all sizes with comprehensive security at the web gateway, SmartFilter incorporates global intelligence from the company's industry-leading reputation system, TrustedSource(TM). Like a credit agency provides credit scores to enable reliable commerce, TrustedSource provides source-based reputation scores for URLs, domains and IP addresses as well as content-based reputation scores for web page content, messages, attachments and images. Using this real-time scoring, SmartFilter allows organizations to detect and prevent web security threats such as spyware, phishing and other malware.

"Cymtec Sentry's DTP engine with the SmartFilter Internet Filter Database offers enterprises with remote or branch office environments a new layer of protection to keep their networks secure and running at optimal performance," said Andrew S. Rubin, president and chief executive officer of Cymtec Systems.
