Matsushita, Sony Join Eight-Member Linux Group for Home Appliances

Posted on: Wednesday, 2 July 2003, 06:00 CDT

Jul. 1--TOKYO--Eight electronics makers, including Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Sony Corp., said Tuesday they formed an alliance to enhance the Linux open-source computer operating system so it can be used more widely in home electric appliances.

The alliance, called CE Linux Forum, hopes to use Linux in such home appliances as audiovisual equipment and mobile phones, officials in the forum said.

Linux is already used widely in personal computers and network servers.

Other companies in the alliance are Hitachi Ltd., NEC Corp., Sharp Corp., Toshiba Corp., Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands and Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea.

U.S. computer giant International Business Machines Corp. is also considering joining the alliance, the officials said.

The move has pitted the eight firms against U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp., which is also trying to expand the use of its Windows operating system in home appliances.
