Mitsubishi Electric Announces Sale of SFP+ Compliant Driver IC for 10Gbps Direct Modulation Laser Diode

Posted on: Wednesday, 20 February 2008, 00:00 CST

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (President and CEO: Setsuhiro Shimomura) announced today the development of a driver IC (ML01720A) for 10Gbps direct modulation laser diodes (LDs). The new product is small enough for installation in small optical transmission devices compliant to Enhanced 8.5 and 10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable Module1 (SFP+), and operates at low power consumption. Sample shipment will begin on March 1, 2008.

The ML01720A will be displayed at Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition (OFC2008) in San Diego on February 26-28, 2008.

Aim of Sale

While network equipment for fiber optic communication widely uses 10Gbps optical transceivers compliant to an industry standard called 10Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable Module2 (XFP), carriers have been looking for transceivers that are small and operate at low power consumption with a wide temperature range, thus enabling high-density installation. Currently, another standard called SFP+ is being considered, which uses smaller transceivers with lower power consumption compared to XFP.

Meanwhile, for transmitter optical sub assemblies (TOSAs) and its driver ICs used in SFP+ compliant transceivers, there is a strong demand to reduce their power consumption and space to mount on printed circuit boards. Following the TOSA for SFP+ developed earlier, Mitsubishi Electric has developed a SFP+ compliant driver IC for 10Gbps direct modulation LDs. It is as small as 4 millimeters x 4 millimeters and operates at low power consumption.

Product Features

1) 55 percent reduced power consumption, best when used with Mitsubishi Electric's TOSA

Power consumption has been reduced by 55 percent compared to our previous model (ML01618) by using our microwave design techniques on high-speed operating driver ICs. When used with Mitsubishi Electric's TOSA for SFP+ (FU-456RDF-6M1), total power consumption of the optical transmitter block will be reduced to 410 mill watts, only two-thirds of the maximum limit for SFP+ of 600 mill watts.

2) Reduced mounting space, a 4-millimeter x 4-millimeter package with its control functions and driver core in one chip

The product is a 4-millimeter x 4-millimeter package, which is the smallest in the industry that has, in one chip, a driver core, automatic laser power control loop (APC) and a function that shuts down automatically to reduce standby power consumption.

Owing to its small size, the driver IC reduces mounting space on printed circuit boards to 47 percent compared to our previous model (ML01618), thus allowing further miniaturization of SFP+ optical transceivers.

3) Operates at wider temperature range with optical output waveform adjusting function

The rise and fall of optical output waveform largely influences transmission speed due to low performance of LDs at high temperature. To avoid speed loss from this, the product has an optical output waveform adjusting function, which enables operation at 85 degrees C, a 10-degree higher temperature compared to our previous model (ML01618).
