Optical Solutions' Technology Implemented at Tamarack Resort

Posted on: Wednesday, 9 February 2005, 15:00 CST

America's newest all-season resort features fiber optic VoIP, video and high-speed Internet

Optical Solutions Inc., the market leader in next-generation fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks, today announced that Tamarack Resort, the nation's newest all-season resort, is deploying a fiber optic communications and entertainment network using Optical Solutions gigabit Ethernet PON (GPON) FiberPath(R) system.

Located 90 miles north of Boise in Donnelly, Idaho, Tamarack Resort has the distinction of not one, but three spectacular outdoor attractions for the enjoyment of its property owners and guests--Tamarack's ski mountain featuring 2,800 vertical feet, a Robert Trent Jones II signature golf course, and scenic Lake Cascade. When fully developed, the resort will feature more than 2,000 dwelling units and all the amenities of a luxury resort vacation destination -- including some services that are a step ahead.

"Because we are building a world-class resort community, it made sense to build a future-proof, world-class infrastructure to support it," said Shelby Weimer, director of information technology at Tamarack Resort. "We evaluated a variety of solutions and determined the FiberPath GPON system from Optical Solutions best suited our current and long-term bandwidth needs. We wanted a system we could economically deploy and easily manage on an ongoing basis -- the FiberPath system solved that for us."

Optical Solutions' FiberPath 500 system is a complete ITU FSAN-compliant equipment and networking solution featuring the telecom industry's first gigabit Ethernet passive optical network for the local access market. FiberPath 500 GPON offers unsurpassed bandwidth capacity and supports seamless migration from analog services to digital IP-based services. More than 120 communities nationwide are served with voice, high-speed data and video services powered by FiberPath.

Tamarack is leveraging the FiberPath system to deliver 5 Mbps of bandwidth - roughly 10 times the speed of ordinary high-speed data service - to each of its dwelling units. This "fat pipe" infrastructure can support a range of advanced communication and entertainment services, including Tamarack's starting menu of VoIP, high-speed Internet, multiple voice (land) lines and digital video entertainment. Resort operators launched service to 33 dwelling units last year, and plan to connect an additional 160 units during the 2005 construction season.

"Our fiber-optic network was built to accommodate a range of exciting services - including many yet to come," Weimer said. "In addition to the top-speed Internet service, multiple telephone features and premium cable-TV menu we offer today, our guests will soon be able to enjoy streaming videos from the Internet (video-on-demand) and the kids will be able to engage in multi-player gaming."

"As more developers invest in fiber networks to differentiate their real estate offering, it's important they give due consideration to the electronics and protocols that run over that fiber so they get appropriate life - and an appropriate return - from their investment," said Mike Dagenais, Optical Solutions president and CEO. "That's why GPON -- with its unprecedented bandwidth and efficient point-to-multipoint architecture -- is a clear winner in both residential and vacation property environments."
