Shiron Satellite Communications – First Live Demonstration of DVB-S2 16APSK Broadband VSAT System

Shiron Satellite Communications, a global supplier of broadband VSAT network systems, demonstrated successfully its InterSKY VSAT platform, utilizing a DVB-S2 16APSK modulation over a live satellite in both Ku and C band.

The demonstration was performed in Rio de Janeiro at a service provider’s teleport facility, using a Brazilian commercial satellite. Shiron announced that 32APSK modulation is also supported by its InterSKY VSAT systems.

“Shiron proved its technology leadership again by being the first to demonstrate live a two-way IP broadband VSAT system transmitting DVB-S2 16APSK modulation, saturating a full transponder on the outbound and receiving 8PSK modulation on the inbound,” said Oscar Glottmann, Shiron’s VP of Sales and Marketing. Glottmann added, “Shiron is the first vendor of IP broadband VSAT systems to demonstrate such superior capability over a commercial satellite at a service provider’s site.”

“By utilizing 16APSK modulation and a high forward error correction code rate on our DVB-S2 outbound signal, we achieved a world record in satellite space segment spectral efficiency, transmitting 117 Mbps over a 36 MHz transponder, with over three bps/Hz on the outbound,” explained Dr. Shaul Laufer, Shiron’s CTO and co-founder. This capability allows InterSKY users to get the highest bandwidth efficiency by transporting more information over less bandwidth. As a result, users benefit from reduced operating costs on expensive satellite bandwidth. Using 8PSK modulation on the inbound, Shiron InterSKY VSAT systems provide the highest spectral efficiency in the market, reaching over two bps/Hz.

This capability is enhanced by Shiron’s InterSKY Dynamic ACM (Adaptive Coding and Modulation) feature, which boosts VSAT efficiency. This feature also enables use of the most efficient MODCOD (modulation and error correction code) for remote VSATs, according to location, antenna size and weather conditions.

In Q1/2008, Shiron will deliver the first InterSKY system including the 16APSK outbound modulation with ACM to a service operator in Colombia, South America.
