Metrowerks Introduces Embedded Linux(R) Development Package for Motorola's PowerQUICC(TM) III Processors

Posted on: Monday, 22 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Developers can now leverage the strength of embedded Linux(R) operating systems in a high-performance communications processor environment with the introduction of the Metrowerks Board Support Package (BSP) for Motorola Inc.'s PowerQUICC III processors.

The Metrowerks BSP is designed to provide the technology required to create embedded Linux applications powered by PowerQUICC III processors, enabling developers to quickly create and bring to market high quality, Linux-based products targeting networking and communications markets.

The Metrowerks BSP is tested and certified, helping to ensure a fully operational solution that is ready to use within a fixed configuration for specific hardware reference platforms. It is designed to provide a foundation for rapid development by including an embedded Linux kernel, a comprehensive GNU debugger and tool-chain, a runtime environment, as well as a complete set of extensive device drivers and libraries for PowerQUICC III processors.

The BSP is fully optimized to work with Metrowerks' Platform Creation Suite, a Linux management tool that eases the customization of the Linux operating system for embedded devices, including Linux OS configuration, build, extension, and deployment tasks.

"The newest Metrowerks BSP helps our PowerQUICC III customers quickly deliver Linux-based communications technologies to market, and demonstrates Motorola's leadership in providing world-class development solutions for PowerQUICC III architectures," said David Perkins, general manager, Networking & Computing Systems Group for Motorola.

According to Berardino Baratta, vice president, Linux Solutions Group for Metrowerks, the offering reflects Metrowerks' commitment to embedded Linux markets. "Increasing the availability of no-cost, off-the-shelf development resources that work with world-class processors like the PowerQUICC III products is key to establishing critical mass for embedded Linux," said Baratta. "By teaming with top processor vendors and addressing embedded Linux markets with an integrated solutions approach, Metrowerks makes it easy for developers to quickly build and bring to market high quality Linux-based devices."

About the PowerQUICC III Processor Family
