Optical Solutions Launches All-New GPON Platform With Direct Path for Legacy Migration; Carriers Can Bypass BPON and Save Millions in Incremental Network Upgrades

The migration path to GPON took a giant short cut today as Optical Solutions, the market leader in GPON technology and FTTP deployments, launched the telecom industry's first GPON optical line terminal (OLT) with integrated remote transport and support for legacy systems and services. The new FiberPath(R) 590 OLT+ system, unveiled at the NTCA Expo '05 in San Antonio, Texas, enables carriers to migrate their legacy networks directly to an all-fiber, all-IP GPON network in all applications. Analysts predict the new technology could save carriers millions.
"For service providers planning BPON deployments and subsequent upgrades to GPON, OSI's GPON OLT gives the option to go straight to GPON today, without an initial BPON installation," said Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research. "This voids the necessity of the BPON to GPON upgrade step, an important consideration, since many North American providers who are deploying BPON see GPON as the logical future of their FTTP."
The FiberPath 590 OLT+ is Optical Solutions' first environmentally hardened system with integrated transport for remote ring applications. Carriers can install a 590 OLT+ up to 52 miles from the central office, enabling significant reach for delivery of IP triple-play services to rural and remote developments or to support CLEC expansions into underserved areas. At the same time, the 590 OLT+ offers carriers the flexibility of tapping the system's full range of copper and fiber line cards for supporting legacy systems and services. Long-term, the 590 OLT+ is engineered with enough bandwidth to preclude carriers from ever having to replace a chassis.
"The 590 OLT+ is a direct response to our customers' needs for a complete and final access solution," said Mike Dagenais, president and CEO of Optical Solutions. "Telcos that are aggressively expanding their territories or upgrading their networks cannot afford the expense or the labor of regularly updating their nodes with the latest cards, or worse, having to completely replace equipment that can't support growing bandwidth demands. The 590 OLT+ gets carriers where they want to go from the start - GPON."
The addition of the 590 OLT+ to the FiberPath GPON family strengthens an already best-selling line of ITU FSAN-compliant equipment and networking solutions for the local access market. More than 120 communities nationwide are served with voice, high-speed data and video services powered by FiberPath systems.
Optical Solutions co-developed the 590 OLT+ with TelStrat, a leading access equipment manufacturer and supplier of integrated platforms for triple-play service delivery. The 590 OLT+ will make its debut at NTCA's IP Integrated Solutions Pavilion (Booth #219), February 15-16, as part of a multi-vendor demonstration of GPON-driven VoIP and IPTV.
