Globecomm Systems Launches New Managed Mobile Network Services Platform Into Africa Utilizing Award Winning IP Network Architecture
Posted on: Monday, 14 February 2005, 15:00 CST
Globecomm Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:GCOM), a global provider of end-to-end satellite-based communications solutions, today announced that the Company has launched a new managed mobile network services platform into Africa utilizing the Company's award winning (patent-pending) Internet Protocol ("IP") network architecture.
Both existing and new cellular operators throughout Africa represent the target market for this platform. Existing cellular operators can now outsource parts of their network infrastructure to Globecomm in areas where it is not cost effective to serve small user groups ranging from 500 to 10,000 potential subscribers. New operators can come on-line with significantly less capital expenses by leveraging Globecomm's existing infrastructure achieving economies of scale and speed of implementation.
Globecomm has developed a patent-pending network architecture based on the concepts of the Soft Mobile Switching Center, coupled with a satellite-based IP Network, which improves the process and reduces the cost of serving small groups of cellular phone customers. The advantages of the system, amongst other things, is it allows the operator's customers access to worldwide long distance minutes at United States rates, coupled with messaging, voicemail, and billing services.
David Hershberg, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Globecomm said, "We are proud of the patent- pending network architecture utilized in this product offering, which was awarded the 2003 GSM technology innovation award for best infrastructure from the GSM association. Globecomm's investment in IP infrastructure, coupled with our expertise in satellite IP transport has opened up yet another market opportunity for the Company. The ability to adapt multiple protocols for efficient transport by satellite has created a single channel at a cost effective price point allowing the Company to enter into the cellular phone service marketplace with limited investment. We intend on expanding this service into underserved markets in Europe over the next few quarters."
