Bell Labs Service Enhancement Technologies Offer Unique Advantages to Lucent Technologies' IMS Solution

CANNES, France, Feb. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- At the 3GSM World Congress trade show and exhibition today, Lucent Technologies announced the integration of six unique Bell Labs-developed software technologies into its industry-leading IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution, enabling converged network operators to create and deliver simple, seamless, secure, portable, and personal multimedia services to their subscribers. These software technologies are part of a new Service Enhancement Layer that gives Lucent's IMS solution -- part of Lucent's Accelerate(TM) Next Generation Communications Solutions portfolio -- distinct advantages over competing IMS implementations.
IMS is an industry standard way of building next-generation networks that will deliver rich IP multimedia services to subscribers over wireless and/or wireline networks. Lucent's approach has resulted in an IMS solution that greatly enhances the ability of service providers to integrate existing applications into the IMS environment and introduce new Value Over IP(TM), VoIP and multimedia services simply and cost-effectively. The Bell Labs IMS service enhancements enable operators to more easily deliver services that blend voice, video and data capabilities, simplifying the creation of converged "lifestyle" service bundles. It also helps reduce the introduction costs and time-to-market for new services by leveraging a common applications infrastructure to deliver services with a common "look and feel" on third- generation (3G) mobile, WiFi, and wireline networks.

The Service Enhancement Layer is a library of technologies that work across wireless and wireline networks to simplify and speed delivery of services. The layer lies above Lucent's standard IMS implementation. Among the Bell Labs technologies in Lucent's IMS Service Enhancement Layer, which are available to service providers today, are:
* For simple service management, a data management tool that integrates
the myriad databases that keep track of each subscriber's basic network
services such as call processing, messaging, and billing, so that all
this data is easily accessed by next-generation applications.
* For seamless operations, a data integration tool that provides a
unified view of personal profile information -- that may be stored on
different networks -- so that users and services can easily access this
information, while safeguarding the end-user's privacy.
* Also for seamless operations, a new service brokering capability that
allows the blending of multiple, existing and future services, while
ensuring that those services interact in a manner that provides a
positive, and customized end-user experience.
* For security in communications, the X.805 standard network security
framework, which was conceived and created by Bell Labs and adopted by
the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
* For portable services, a tool that provides subscribers access to voice
and data services, information and messages when roaming -- across a
wide variety of wireless and wireline networks -- outside their home
network.
* For personalization and rapid service customization, a new rules engine
-- distributed throughout the network -- that supports rich
personalization of end-user services, and enables network operators to
quickly modify network behaviors to target particular customer segments
or offer quality of service guarantees.
Also critical to successful implementation of IMS services is reliance on the Session Initiation Protocol, or SIP, which Bell Labs helped develop. All IMS elements use SIP to communicate with each other.
