Google has launched Google Sites, an addition to its Google Apps suite for collaborative website creation, which it said will enable users to gather and share information such as videos, calendars, presentations, attachments, and text.

It said creating and editing pages in Google Site does not require any knowledge of HTML or web design skills, and starting a new page and adding content can be done by a single click. The application is searchable and can be accessed through any web browser.

Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise at Google, said: “Creating a team website has always been too complicated, requiring dedicated hardware and software as well as programming skills. Now with Google Sites, anyone can create an entirely customized site in minutes and invite others to contribute. We are literally adding an edit button to the web.”

The launch is a move by Google to challenge Microsoft’s SharePoint product.
