Intel Introduces 'Atom' Line of Microprocessors

Intel Corp plans to release a new line of microprocessors aimed at satisfying the growing need fueled by mobile Internet devices. In addition, the California-based company said it hopes to prosper from the expanding market of netbooks, which are low-cost PCs priced around $250.
Intel said the newest family of chips, which are developed on 45 nanometer chipmaking technology, uses a new microarchitecture designed for small devices and low power consumption.
The chip is less than 25 square millimeters, and 11 of the chip's dies would fit in an area the size of a U.S . penny.
Nathan Brookwood, an analyst at market research firm Insight 64, said the new chip marks the development of Intel’s first new processor design since the release of the Pentium Pro in 1995. Former pet project names for the new chips include Silverthorne and Diamondville.
"Diamondville and Silverthorne both represent an attempt by Intel to sell chips profitably for a whole lot less," Brookwood said.
Intel’s Centrino Atom, aimed at streamlining efficiency in mobile-internet devices will include the Intel Atom processor, which adds integrated graphics, a wireless radio, as well as thinner and lighter designs.
Sean Maloney, chief sales and marketing officer for Intel, told Reuters that Atom is "a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices. We believe it will unleash new innovation across the industry."
Intel anticipates the new chips to hit shelves by the middle of the year.
