The New Zealand Mobile Communications Market is Now Approaching Saturation and Mobile Subscriber Growth Will Taper Off Significantly in 2008 and 2009

Posted on: Tuesday, 4 March 2008, 12:00 CST

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c84567), has announced the addition of "New Zealand - Mobile Communications - Statistical Overview and Major Operators" to their offering.

The current mobile market is a duopoly of Vodafone New Zealand and Telecom Mobile. The pair operate the only cellular networks in the country. Vodafone took the number one spot in mobile subscribers in New Zealand back in 2003 and now holds 53% of the subscriber market, despite a 2% overall market share loss in 2006/07. TelstraClear abandoned development of its own mobile network and reverted to a resale agreement with Telecom. New Zealand Communications Ltd (formerly Econet) is also in the process of rolling out a 3G network, although the rollout has been suffering from numerous delays.

The New Zealand market is now approaching saturation and mobile subscriber growth will taper off significantly in 2008 and 2009. Vodafone has begun to upgrade its HSDPA mobile broadband network capable of significantly faster speeds, however by late 2007, it only covered 60% of the country. By mid 2007 over half of Telecom's Mobile Broadband network had been upgraded with EV-DO Revision A technology. Detailed subscriber and revenue statistics including ARPU figures are provided in this report, along with overviews of all the major operators.
