Research and Markets: Vodafone Now the Third Largest Mobile Carrier in Australia After Telstra and Optus

Vodafone Australia is 100% owned by Vodafone Group Plc. Vodafone won Australia’s third mobile carrier licence in 1992 and began operations in 1993. It is now the third largest mobile carrier in Australia after Telstra and Optus. The company’s GSM network currently covers 93% of the Australian population. Vodafone’s 3G network provides customers with access to music, sports, games, news, music tracks, mobile TV, video calling and mobile broadband services. By 2007 Vodafone was underway with a strategy to exploring ways to move into fixed-line communications. In April 2007 Vodafone revamped its digital music offering, launching a new track download service accessible from both 3G phones and fixed Internet connections. By July 2007 Vodafone Australia had completed its HSPA major upgrade to its 3G network, in greater metropolitan Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Adelaide and Perth. In December 2007 Vodafone Australia announced plans to roll out a national 3G HSPA upgraded mobile broadband network that will provide high-speed coverage to 95% of the Australian population before the end of 2008.
