So far eight West Virginia women have been nominated to be America’s Favorite Mom – a promotion by NBC and Teleflora in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day celebration on May 11, 1908, in honor of her mother at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton and simultaneously in Philadelphia.

The church is now the Mother’s Day shrine. Teleflora, the floral arrangement company, will become the shrine’s first official corporate sponsor.

Nominations for favorite mom may be made online through April 30. Videos, photographs and essay testimonials from children, family and friends are put online to be read by site visitors.

Fifteen finalists will be selected the week before Mother’s Day, and they will appear on NBC’s “Today Show.” At the end of each show, viewers will have a chance to vote for their favorite mom.

According to a news release, the winning mom from each day’s show will be featured on a primetime television special on Mother’s Day on May 11. Cash prizes ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 and other gifts will be awarded.
