Turbolinux Allies With ZTE and HP to Facilitate the Application of Linux in China's Telecommunications Industry

Posted on: Friday, 18 February 2005, 09:00 CST

Turbolinux, a global leader of Linux-based solutions, has announced that it has signed an alliance agreement with ZTE and Hewlett-Packard (HP). Turbolinux will facilitate the application of Linux throughout China's telecommunications industry.

ZTE Corporation is China's largest telecommunications equipment provider, specializing in customized network solutions for telecom carriers worldwide. Its products are found in more than 40 countries and regions, including Cyprus, Bangladesh, Thailand, the USA, Russia, Egypt, Kenya, Congo, Zambia, Benin and Nepal. ZTE has been listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange since 1997. It also has listed its shares on the Hong Kong stock exchange since December 9, 2004. This year, ZTE`s revenues are expected to reach approximately $5B in U.S. dollars.

According to the agreement, Turbolinux and HP hardware, which supports Linux, will be the preferred software & hardware in ZTE. At the same time, Turbolinux, HP and ZTE will invest in a Linux Lab Center at the ZTE Research Institute located in Nanjing. Here, R&D, testing and optimization of ZTE product lines will take place. Turbolinux and HP will provide hardware and software for the Linux Lab Center, and ZTE will dispatch personnel to operate it. From a new business perspective, ZTE will then introduce Linux in large-scale in its product lines.

The recognition and large deployment of Linux into the telecommunication industry is the driving force between the collaboration of ZTE, Turbolinux and HP. As the leader in Linux, Turbolinux is committed to the use of Linux and its products in China, which has more than an 80 percent share in the domestic telecommunications market. With its extensive products and service experience, Turbolinux is confident it will continue to create more value for its partners. The company has been collaborating with ZTE for nearly three years -- from the initial intelligent network, to CDMA, and basic network management platforms, to fixed value added services, etc. Currently, Turbolinux is the primary platform for ZTE Linux-based product lines.

"There are many types of software in telecommunications, but the OS is the important and basal software," says Daxiong Xie, senior vice president of ZTE. "ZTE puts a high value on Linux-based infrastructure equipment and because of this, Linux will be increasingly applied throughout the telecommunications industry here."

"ZTE is one of the largest, comprehensive telecommunications equipment and service providers in China, and it plays an important role in the use of Linux here," says Claude Zhou, the GM of Turbolinux China. "The collaboration with ZTE is very important to Turbolinux. We will provide high-level technical support and consulting for ZTE, which ties into the overall Linux strategy by leveraging our advantages and introducing Linux technology to the world. Additionally, this collaboration will maximize the advantages and competence of ZTE, Turbolinux and HP. It will also provide a complete and best-in-class Linux solution for the telecommunications industry and ultimately create more value for our customers and partners."

Turbolinux and HP are close strategic partners in developing China's telecommunications market. The collaboration of Turbolinux and HP will result in an optimized and highly efficient software & hardware platform.

Development over the last few years has been rapid. According to an IDC report, Linux will grow 25 percent annually in server markets in the coming years, and the China/Linux market is expected to grow at a 40 percent rate. The fast growth of Linux brings huge opportunities for other related vendors. Linux attracts a high level of interest from telecommunications players for its aggressive growth, high performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness -- all tending to make companies migrate many of their applications onto Linux platforms.

In fact, Linux has proven its value in the telecommunications industry by helping telecommunications enterprises reduce costs and provide more reliable services and other benefits. There are many successful cases of Linux helping to reduce telecommunications costs and improve performance with companies such as Germany Telecom, Italia Telecom, AT&T, etc. In China, Linux also provides a number of successful track records, including nation-wide China Mobile SMS Gateway System, China Mobile Business Analysis System, China Unicom Video Conference System, etc., and all use Turbolinux software as the platform.
