SonicWALL Technology Strengthens Network Security, Remote Access for Litigation Services and Support Company

Posted on: Wednesday, 12 March 2008, 09:00 CDT

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SonicWALL, Inc., a leading provider of secure infrastructure solutions, today announced that RVM, a New York City-based holistic legal technology consulting company, has deployed several SonicWALL solutions to help strengthen its email, remote access and network security. The combination of solutions, which includes several SonicWALL firewall appliances, an SSL-VPN appliance and an email security appliance, has helped RVM to secure its growing business and Internet traffic. These SonicWALL solutions assist RVM in protecting its organization from email-bound and Internet related threats, as well as significantly reduces the amount of spam hitting corporate servers. SonicWALL provides RVM with robust, flexible and manageable network security at an affordable price.

As a litigation support and services company, RVM relies on its network to exchange large quantities of confidential customer data. "A secure connection to the Internet and tight perimeter defenses are critical to our success and the safety of our client's data," said Geoffrey Sherman, associate director of technology. Driven by its growing business, and the release of a new online legal document review solution, RVM's reliance on a secure, robust connection to the outside world became mission critical. During the datacenter buildout, RVM updated its internet connectivity from multiple T1 lines to redundant high-speed, 100 Mbps burstable pipelines. During the upgrade, the company determined it needed stronger and more reliable security because its existing solutions would not be able to handle the additional bandwidth. RVM purchased the SonicWALL PRO Series 4060 appliances to replace Cisco devices and to provide redundant firewalls with stateful, high-availability failover support, as well as bandwidth filtering, gateway virus protection, and spyware filtering.

"Even with two Cisco certified engineers on staff we still find the SonicWALL PRO series solution to be much easier to use than our existing Cisco devices," said Geoffrey Sherman, associate director of technology, RVM. "What would usually take a couple of days on the Cisco devices, took us at most a couple of hours with the new SonicWALL appliances. SonicWALL's solutions have proven to be very reliable, almost to the point of being transparent; they just work. The SonicWALL interface is straightforward, and other than firmware upgrades, we have had to do very little maintenance on the devices. Our customers rely on our network to be up as much as we do, and since the implementation, we have not had any issues."

In addition to securing its network from Internet threats, RVM was also inundated with spam. To combat the influx of spam RVM chose to implement the SonicWALL ES200 email security appliance. Using the SonicWall ES200's reporting tools, administrators logged spam metrics as high as 97% -- meaning only 3% of the inbound email was actually legitimate. Prior to deploying the SonicWALL ES200, the majority of the spam was reaching employees' email boxes where all the spam was collecting on the Exchange server as well as being archived to a separate location. As a result, the Exchange store was constantly filling up, forcing RVM to perform time-consuming mailbox maintenance tasks as well as frequently investing in more storage. With the ES200, RVM was able to block all of the spam at the gateway, providing end-users the ability to customize their personal spam settings.

Sherman added, "The ES200 quickly showed its return on investment, saving us between 550 to 785 MBs per month in storage. Our users now have more control over their inbound email and we have eliminated viruses hitting the user's mailboxes."

RVM also replaced its IPsec client-based VPN with a SonicWALL SSL-VPN 2000 that provides employees in its New York and Chicago offices with secure remote access to their office computers and bookmarked locations on the network through a secure Web-based interface. The SSL-VPN allows RVM to close open ports previously needed for remote access and satisfy the security requirements of its customers.

"SonicWALL's solutions protect RVM and its employees from a multitude of email and Internet threats, while helping to meet the levels of security that its customers need," said Andy Klein, senior product manager for SonicWALL. "SonicWALL security appliances allow small and medium sized businesses, like RVM, to have manageable enterprise-class security at affordable prices. The combination of the SonicWALL solutions delivers comprehensive network security and we are pleased that RVM continues to see positive results from its investment."
