Orange Expands High Speed Broadband Connectivity

France Telecom has launched 3G+ HSDPA high speed broadband connectivity for corporate customers through its Orange brand.

Orange is offering downlink speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and uplink speeds of up to 1.4Mbps, and has also launched broadband internet access for its fixed line customers.

According to French telecoms regulator ARCEP, the number of broadband connections in France reached 15.5 million by December 2007, up 22% from the previous year. France Telecom plans to provide 71% of the population with 3G+ coverage by the end of 2008, as well as 30,000 Orange WiFi hotspots and more than 150 roaming deals for use abroad.

Orange, it is the only operator in France offering three types of mobile phones compatible with 3G+ HSDPA that can be adapted to laptop computers, the company said. These plug & play mobiles are automatically installed on PC and Mac laptop and desktop computers.

Orange is also offering its fixed line users broadband internet access for 39.90 euros ($62) a month. The offer comes with an optional Digital TV access that works via the livebox for a monthly rent of 3 euros ($5) with an initial deposit of 49 euros ($76) for the set top box.

According to the latest edition of TV Markets Quarterly Monitoring from InfoCom, France has the highest IPTV deployment in the world at 4.3 million households. Orange competes with Iliad's Free and Neuf Cegetel for market share.
