Juniper Networks Participates in National ''Cyber Storm II'' Exercise Sponsored By the U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced its participation in this week's Cyber Storm II, the nation's largest and most comprehensive cyber security exercise. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) National Cyber Security Division (NCSD), the goal of Cyber Storm II is to examine the processes, procedures, tools, and organizational responses required to successfully defend against a multi-sector coordinated attack on the global cyber infrastructure, or to respond to a natural disaster and its interdependent impacts.
Concluding tomorrow, Cyber Storm II has featured a week of realistic exercises centered on a cyber-focused scenario that escalated to the level of a national cyber incident requiring a coordinated government-industry response. Participation in Cyber Storm II included federal, state, local, and international governments, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, and private sector leaders from the information technology, telecommunication, transportation (rail and pipeline), and chemical sectors.
Juniper Networks was among a select group of companies invited by DHS to help the government plan and conduct the exercise. Juniper supported Cyber Storm II in three areas: first, in developing exercise scenarios in advance of the event; then in providing Juniper technical experts who served as "players" during the exercise and responded to scenarios in real-time; and third, Juniper executives played a "planner/controller" role in the Exercise Control Cell during the event, coordinating the government-industry response to attack and incident scenarios.
"The security and economic health of the world's nations are now fully dependent on high-performance communications networks," said Scott Kriens, chairman and CEO of Juniper Networks, Inc. and a Presidential appointee to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC). "We are honored to have been invited by DHS to share our experience developing a fast, reliable, and secure networking environment as a part of Cyber Storm II, and to help improve the ability of U.S. government and industry to collaborate in their response to a variety of threats to our communications infrastructure."
Lessons learned from Cyber Storm II, like those gleaned from Cyber Storm I held in February 2006, will help to drive ongoing government/industry risk-based management programs to enhance government and private sector responses, and increase public awareness of cyber security risks and prevention strategies.
