Ikanos Communications Expands Its Fx Product Portfolio to Include the First Chipset to Offer Symmetric 100 Mbps Over Copper

Ikanos' Programmable Fx 100100 Fiber-Extension Chipsets Enable Carriers to Begin Offering Symmetric 100 Mbps Ethernet Service to Customers

Ikanos Communications, a leading developer of fiber-fast broadband-over-copper solutions, today announced it has added the Fx(TM) 100100 to its successful family of fiber-extension products. The Fx 100100 is the first programmable silicon solution to provide speeds of up to 100 Mbps in both upstream and downstream directions over a single copper line. Ikanos believes that its new solution enables carriers to increase their revenue stream by offering the same high-speed symmetric bandwidth over existing telephone lines that businesses are used to receiving from their Ethernet LAN today.

The Fx 100100 is designed for Optical Network Units (ONUs) and Optical Line Terminals (OLTs), while the Fx 100100S-4 is designed for Subscriber Located Equipment (SLE) and Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). Both products are part of Ikanos' Fx family of chipsets that extend Fiber to the Building (FTTB), Fiber to the Node (FTTN), Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) and Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services over copper.

The Fx solutions enable carriers to offer a comprehensive suite of high-value services such as the triple play of voice, video, and data; real-time high-resolution video conferencing; enhanced gaming experiences; and peer-to-peer file sharing. Ikanos' Fx solutions spare carriers the cost of trenching fiber because they use the currently installed base of last-mile copper and deployed fiber.

Carriers and Equipment Vendors See Need for 100 Mbps Symmetrical Service

Fx 100100 and Fx 100100S-4 Support Symmetrical Service

The Ikanos Fx 100100 chipsets include the four-port Fx 100100, designed for use in ONUs and OLTs, and the single-port Fx 100100S-4 designed for use in SLE and ONTs. Both products support symmetric bandwidth of up to 100 Mbps in 64 Kbps increments. The Fx 100100 interoperates with previous generations of deployed SLE, while the Fx 100100S-4 is backwards compatible with Ikanos' existing chipsets for the ONU and OLT, including the Fx 7030, Fx 10050, SmartLeap(TM) 8100, and SmartLeap(TM) 8800.

Price and Availability

Fx 100100 evaluation systems and production silicon and software are currently available. The chipsets are listed at $25 per port based on 10,000-port quantities.
