InfiniBand Adoption Highlighted by Broad Participation from Major Server, Storage, Enterprise, Government, Financial and Software Organizations
The OpenIB Alliance announced the successful conclusion of the first OpenIB Developer's Workshop for open source InfiniBand software development. The workshop was organized in response to the Linux community's acceptance of the OpenIB software stack into the 2.6 kernel and focused on accelerating software development and testing for key database, storage and parallel computing applications. The workshop attracted a critical mass of participation from server and storage OEMs; enterprise software vendors; and government, financial, and corporate end users.
"The progress in Infiniband Architecture hardware, in terms of speed increases and reduction in cost, has been so outstanding recently that adoption has reached critical mass," said Dr. Mark Seager, principal investigator, Advanced Technologies, Computation Directorate, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. "The missing ingredient has been a single open source software stack. With the advent of the OpenIB Alliance this is now available and Infiniband has matured to become an enterprise class solution. In addition OpenIB is leveraging a vibrant ecosystem that promises to sustain the rate of progress."
The OpenIB software stack includes support for multiple applications including database and application servers, high performance computing, NAS and SAN storage, and sophisticated network monitoring and management. The solution includes:
-- DAPL for clustered database and NAS storage applications
-- MPI - Message Passing Interface to support high performance computing applications
-- SDP and IP over IB for transparently accelerating traditional sockets-based communications applications
-- SRP and iSER for SAN level storage applications compatible with SATA, SAS, SCSI, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel drives
-- OpenSM and other network management tools
Event attendees included developers from IBM (Note A), Hewlett-Packard, Fujitsu, Microsoft, Red Hat, CSC, NEC, NTT, Panasas, SBS Technologies, Appro, Tyan and existing members of the OpenIB Alliance. Customer organizations attending, in addition to members, included J.P Morgan Chase, NASA, Lawrence Berkeley National and Ames Laboratories, Ohio State University, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and the University of Michigan. A full list of the attendees is at www.openib.org/workshopattendees and proceedings can be found at www.openib.org/workshop.
