Posted on: Thursday, 24 February 2005, 06:00 CST

Alcatel, the French maker of telecommunications gear, and Microsoft Corp. said yesterday that they will jointly develop Internet-based TV services for telephone companies.

"We are committed to integrate the current Alcatel video solutions with Microsoft TV IPTV Edition, resulting in a market- leading integrated offering," Alcatel Chief Executive Serge Tchuruk said.

In November, Microsoft announced that it would provide TV technology to SBC Communications Inc.

In Europe, several companies, including Telefonica SA and Deutsche Telekom AG, have launched such services.

InfoSpace settlement approved by courts

The King County Superior Court and U.S. District Court have approved a settlement agreement in the InfoSpace derivative case. The settlement calls for Bellevue-based InfoSpace, a provider of search technology and mobile phone services, to receive a cash payment of about $83 million.

The suit was brought against former officers and directors of InfoSpace, including founder Naveen Jain, by an individual shareholder.

The settlement can still be appealed.

FBI warns of phony e-mails that have virus

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The FBI warned yesterday that a computer virus is being spread through unsolicited e-mails that purport to come from the FBI.

The e-mails appear to come from an fbi.gov address. They tell recipients that they have accessed illegal Web sites and that their Internet use has been monitored by the FBI's "Internet Fraud Complaint Center," the FBI said.

The messages then direct recipients to open an attachment and answer questions. The computer virus is in the attachment.

"Recipients of this or similar solicitations should know that the FBI does not engage in the practice of sending unsolicited e-mails to the public in this manner," the FBI said in a statement.

The bureau is investigating. Quick Hits is written by P-I reporters Todd Bishop, John Cook and Dan Richman. Send comments to johncook@seattlepi.com. This report includes information from The Associated Press and Bloomberg News.
