Eutelsat, SpeedCast Announce Maritime Broadband Communications Service

Posted on: Thursday, 27 March 2008, 09:00 CDT

Eutelsat Communications and SpeedCast, a satellite service provider owned by AsiaSat, are planning to jointly launch a new maritime broadband communications service for the commercial shipping sector.

The new service will serve key shipping routes using Ku-band satellite capacity, mostly on Eutelsat and AsiaSat satellites. Eutelsat says that the service will switch from one satellite coverage beam to another using one meter stabilized satellite antennas.

The companies claim that the Ku-band antennas will reduce equipment costs by more than 50% and the space occupied on deck by about 60%, compared with the currently used 2.4 meter C-band systems.

Eutelsat and SpeedCast plan to target operators of merchant shipping and fishing fleets. The service will enable establishment of offshore virtual private networks with land-based offices so that the ship becomes a mobile office integrated into an overall network.

The provision of additional services to crew such as internet access, GSM connectivity, video-on-demand and IPTV services can also be carried through the satellite connection.

Pierre-Jean Beylier, CEO of SpeedCast, said: "Eutelsat and SpeedCast's service combines internet access and VoIP for the crew, and secure VPN capabilities with guaranteed bandwidth for mission critical corporate applications."

The service will be provided via a 24/7 Network Operations Centre operated by SpeedCast in Hong Kong connecting with a network of teleports, including SpeedCast's Hong Kong teleport and the Turin teleport operated by Eutelsat's broadband affiliate, Skylogic.
