NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq:NETL), the leader in the design and development of knowledge-based processors, today announced that its NL5000 processors are shipping in production volume in the Extreme Networks' (Nasdaq:EXTR) BlackDiamond 10K core switch.
Extreme Networks, a leader in open converged networks, continues to deliver a unique strategy for revitalizing the network infrastructure to support the hundreds of thousands of networked devices, both computing and non-computing. This strategy includes Extreme's Unified Access enterprise edge architecture designed to meet the needs of Metro service providers and large enterprises that have been waiting to deploy a single, secure and seamless network for both wired and wireless network access.
"NetLogic Microsystems' NL5000 knowledge-based processor family was a natural decision for Extreme Networks to use in its BlackDiamond switch. Extreme Network's core switching platform for the 10GbE market segment requires low-power, small package size, high speed and high performance, and NetLogic Microsystems was able to deliver those features immediately," said Martyn Humphries, vice president of marketing for NetLogic Microsystems. "Our NL5000 knowledge-based processors are able to improve system performance and functionality for a variety of advanced devices in enterprise, metro, access, edge and core networks."
The key to knowledge-based processor design is the use of parallel processing and deep pipelining techniques, which allows devices to handle multiple tasks at higher throughput rates. Parallel processing enables multiple layer-4 decisions to be made simultaneously including quality of service decisions, access control decisions for security and low latency forwarding for voice and video packets. This significantly increases performance and provides the ability to process IPv6 packets at 10 gigabit wire-speed.
Built on its fourth generation silicon technology, the new BlackDiamond 10K switch leads the industry in scalability, resiliency and extensibility in a true 10 Gigabit Ethernet platform. Equipped with a first-of-its kind modular software foundation, ExtremeWare XOS, the new BlackDiamond 10K enables customers to successfully build a next generation intelligent network core and allows them to easily migrate to a single converged network.
NetLogic Microsystems' NL5000 knowledge-based processors are built on an advanced 7-layer copper 0.13um CMOS logic process with high-speed and low-power transistors. In conjunction with the NL5000 processors' innovative architecture, the high-speed transistors available on TSMC's 0.13um process maximize performance, enabling processor speeds in excess of 300MHz, which is the fastest available for these applications today, while achieving lower power than can be attained with less advanced processes that may have lower speed transistors or more resistive aluminum interconnects.
NetLogic Microsystems' NL5000 processors are available in production quantities now. For volume pricing information please contact sales@netlogicmicro.com.
