Seagate, NetCell to Show Easy-to-Use, High-Performance External Serial ATA Storage at IDF
Posted on: Monday, 28 February 2005, 09:00 CST
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Seagate Technology will team with NetCell at the Intel Developer Forum this week to demonstrate an external Serial ATA (eSATA) storage solution that makes it significantly easier for small and midsize businesses and personal computer users to increase storage capacity, performance and data protection for digital content such as presentations, CAD/CAM images, financial records, e-mail, home movies and photographs.
"eSATA delivers highly scalable, cost-effective add-on storage for a number of applications across consumer and business environments -- from PCs to entry-level servers," said Jeff Loebbaka, vice president of Global Marketing at Seagate. "The Seagate-NetCell demonstration at IDF will highlight eSATA capabilities such as ease of use and fast data transfer rates for higher system performance."
eSATA - High-Speed Bandwidth and Data Protection
The live IDF demonstration combines two Seagate eSATA 160GB, 7200-rpm, 8MB cache external hard drives with a NetCell eSATA PCI RAID card that transfers data at 1.5 Gigabit/second (Gb/s). The NetCell eSATA RAID card enables automatic backup and recovery, simplifies the deployment of additional drives and offers seamless capacity expansion. Seagate and NetCell eSATA also delivers these capabilities:
-- Up to three times the bandwidth of USB and Firewire products and easy- to-scale capacity for data-hungry applications such as digital-video recording and editing, digital photography and entry-level server storage backup.
-- eSATA interface transfer rate of 150 Megabytes per second to increase system performance, with eSATA solutions providing 1.5Gb/s or 3Gb/s interface speeds.
-- Portability that allows data to be easily moved from one computer to another and to a remote location for archival backup.
-- Cost-effective and higher performance alternative to tape backup.
-- Gives PC users an easy way to deploy a high-performance system for storage of home movies, music, photographs, email and personal files -- eSATA can be installed in as little as 5 minutes.
Seagate eSATA hard drives also can be deployed in RAID configurations to deliver high levels of performance and data protection prevalent in workstations and servers but traditionally too costly to implement in PCs and consumer devices.
Adding eSATA is as simple as installing an eSATA host bus controller for desktop systems and connecting up to three eSATA hard drives using eSATA cables and connectors. The NetCell PCI RAID card includes an on-board BIOS that automatically recognizes the hard drives and recommends RAID configurations. eSATA will be integrated with motherboards of future desktop systems, making the addition of external storage for desktop and notebook computers even easier.
Seagate, NetCell Show eSATA Benefits at IDF
Seagate and NetCell will demonstrate an eSATA solution March 1-3 at the Intel Developer Forum at San Francisco's Moscone Center, booth 310. The demonstration using the NetCell eSATA RAID card shows a configuration of three Seagate external hard drives with RAID striping and mirroring to increase data protection and system performance.
