CORRECTING and REPLACING Sharp Microelectronics to Present at Embedded Systems Conference, Focus on Design Considerations for Media-Rich Devices

Posted on: Monday, 28 February 2005, 12:00 CST

Fourth graph, first sentence of release should read: Peter Glaskowsky, Vice President of System Architecture for MemoryLogix (sted Peter Glaskowsky, a senior analyst for MicroDesign Resources.)

The corrected release reads:

SHARP MICROELECTRONICS TO PRESENT AT EMBEDDED SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, FOCUS ON DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR MEDIA-RICH DEVICES

Sharp to showcase performance enhancements to its BlueStreak(TM) ARM-Based SoCs

Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas announced its selection as a speaker for the upcoming Embedded Systems Conference San Francisco, March 8-10, 2005. As part of the conference's Consumer Design Seminar, Sharp will present a session entitled "Issues in Video Design," which will address design considerations for portable media player systems and other media-rich applications.

Portable media player devices continue to experience explosive growth, and thus place unique design challenges on software and systems engineers. This tutorial-style presentation will offer practical tips and best practice examples to help engineers differentiate their products and decrease time to market, while meeting the price, performance, and power needs of cost-conscious, selective consumers.

The dynamic interplay between system performance and media access on a mass storage device, and integration between LCD, the microprocessor, and supporting media software will also be addressed. Other design considerations discussed will include decode and color conversion performance, and rendering quality on an ARM-based system without specialized decode/rendering hardware. Although this presentation is centered on the ARM architecture, most of the information can be applied to generic or even specialized media architectures.

The presentation will be delivered by Kevin Wells, application engineer at Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas, followed by a discussion period moderated by Peter Glaskowsky, Vice President of System Architecture for MemoryLogix. The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8 from 4 - 5:30 PM.

In the ESC exhibit hall (booth #2026), Sharp also will highlight performance upgrades to its line of BlueStreak(TM) MCUs and SoC components, including:

-- Enhancements to its ARM922T SoCs that boost performance and delivery of multimedia applications requiring MPEG4 or WMV content, to further support LCD-centric, media-rich applications;

-- New software-based audio/video decoding capabilities to support Sharp's QCIF+ and QVGA reference designs for media-rich, portable applications;

-- The availability of the LH79524 and LH79525, ARM7 core-based, 16/32- and 32-bit SoCs in quantity. These components feature on-board Ethernet MAC and USB for networked and media applications where visual content and connectivity between devices are paramount.

Sharp will also demonstrate its full line of BlueStreak ARM based 16/32- and 32-bit MCUs and SoCs, which provide embedded support for a variety of consumer and industrial applications. Other Sharp solutions that will be demonstrated in the booth include:

-- New QCIF+ and QVGA reference designs for portable, media-rich applications, and a demonstration of Sharp's MCUs and SoCs running MPEG4, MP3, MIDI and other multimedia software;

-- Demonstration of the comprehensive line-up of ARM-powered low-cost development hardware and software tools, documentation and software library, which make up the necessary tools required for end applications ranging from cost-conscious toy designs to media-rich devices;

-- System solutions for various applications, featuring Sharp's innovative LCD products.

Sharp's activities at Embedded Systems Conference San Francisco are part of the company's worldwide commitment to offer engineers a comprehensive line of MCUs and SoCs to streamline development time and overall system cost. The BlueStreak MCUs and SoCs are also designed to easily integrate with other Sharp-produced components such as LCDs, optoelectronics and Flash memory. Executives and product specialists will be on-site for further inquiries.
