ZiLOG and USA Technologies to Launch eZ-APN(TM) Module, World's First Authorization, Payment and Networking Module for 'Everyday' Devices, at Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco

Posted on: Monday, 28 February 2005, 18:00 CST

SAN JOSE, Calif. and MALVERN, Pa., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ZiLOG(R), Inc. and USA Technologies Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: USTT) are to launch the eZ-Authorization, Payment and Networking Module (eZ-APN(TM) Module), the world's first automated authorization, payment and networking module for non-PC embedded, 'everyday' devices, at a media breakfast on the first day of the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, California. The companies are extending an invitation to accredited media to join them for the unveiling of this joint technology.

About the eZ-APN Module:

The eZ-APN module can be attached to virtually any non-PC embedded device. Using the module allows the device to be wirelessly network enabled, with the capability to authorize use or access and process cashless payments via debit, credit or any other designated payment card.

USA Technologies' proprietary technology in the eZ-APN module opens up endless new application and business opportunities. It is already in use in vending machines, point-of-sale terminals, unattended kiosks and laundry machines, where transactions are commonplace. The eZ-APN module can also be used effectively and built right into product in the leisure, security, health care, sports and home appliance industries.

At the event, the two companies will demonstrate a number of applications that the technology can be used for:

-- A golf swing and putting analyzer (provided by P3 Pro-Swing): Offers golf enthusiasts the opportunity to practice and hone their skills at various locations, such as a hotel, health club or even the office, pay for it with a credit or debit card, and electronically compare their drive or putt against course records online, worldwide, and with world class champion golfers.

-- A blood pressure machine: Once networked, this device can accept debit/credit cards, control and authorize activation, and feature, print and file blood pressure history. Users can also assign information access to their physician who can monitor their health via the Internet.

-- Interactive laundry service: Already in use on a number of college campuses across the USA via the e-SUDS program, this application allows students to use their college ID cards to pay for their laundry, check the availability of washers and dryers online, and receive an e-mail notification of when the washing is done, leaving more time to study (of course!).

Senior executives from both USA Technologies and ZiLOG will be talking about the eZ-APN module, how it was developed, how it works, how they envisage it making a real difference in the home, workplace and in leisure, and why the two companies came together to undertake this ambitious project. They will also be available to answer any questions.
