Apple Voted Most Popular Brand

Posted on: Monday, 31 March 2008, 16:20 CDT

A recent survey conducted by the online magazine brandchannel.com found that the Apple brand has the biggest effect on consumers around the world.

Microsoft and the United States national brand were voted those most in need of an overhaul.

The survey, conducted online from February 24 to March 9, queried readers on which brands had the most impact on their daily lives, their behavior and their view of the world. The rankings were based on answers from almost 2,000 readers from 107 countries.

Apple came out on top as the overwhelming favorite, with nearly 2,000 professionals and students voting the company the best brand in six categories, including most inspiring brand and the one readers cannot live without.

Microsoft was also a winner, although in a category the company may not appreciate
. It received the dubious distinction of the brand most readers wanted to argue with, and the one they most wanted to overhaul. Taking second place in this category was brand USA.

"Apple has clearly captured the hearts and minds by leading across most categories. Others, such as the USA nation brand, which ranks highly as most in need of a rebrand, requires help according to our readers," brandchannel editor Jim Thompson told Reuters.

One of the survey’s most interesting results was that few of the respondents thought there was such a thing as a “green” brand, despite millions spent by some of the world's biggest companies to rebrand themselves as “green” or "environmentally-friendly".

The poll did not account for a brand's economic value, assigned through the nebulous process that regularly puts Coca-Cola in first place.

Referring to Apple, one user said the company had "never a dull moment", noting it was consistently "reinventing itself all along and providing, over and over again, a new perspective on what we thought was carved in stone".

Microsoft, on the other hand, had "gone from innovative and bold to stodgy and follower," said an anonymous reader.

Following Apple in the most inspiring brand category were Nike, Coca-Cola, Google and Starbucks, according to the survey.

With the exception of Virgin in place of Starbucks, these were the same brands most readers would "like to sit next to at a dinner party".
