National Semiconductor Showcases Advanced Analog Technology for Mobile Applications at CTIA

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Semiconductor Corporation will feature its newest technologies for mobile phones and other mobile applications in booth 6645 at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) show in New Orleans, which runs from March 14-16.
National is a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal technologies used in cell phones and other mobile applications. "Analog is the key differentiator for handset manufacturers," said Suneil Parulekar, senior vice president of National's Analog Products Group. "National's innovative analog portfolio enables our customers to create exciting features that consumers want such as longer battery life, sharper display images, smaller form factors, power-efficient lighting solutions and advanced user interfaces."
At CTIA, National will showcase a complete portfolio of analog solutions for a typical "clam-shell" or "flip" cell phone. The demonstration includes an audio 3D subsystem and speaker drivers, small format display drivers, backlight lighting management units, fun lighting drivers with built-in audio synchronization and camera-phone flash drivers. It is powered by National's FlexPMU(TM) multi-functional, dynamically programmable single-chip power management unit. The FlexPMU is designed to power application processors based on ARM(R) technology, including Intel's XScale(R) processor, and integrates 12 power domains for increased efficiency and reduced board space. The camera and display interfaces use National's power-saving Mobile Pixel Link (MPL) technology, which reduces the number of wires needed for a flip phone from 32 to only 6. MPL products allow handset manufacturers to reduce system costs, through the replacement of expensive flex cables and reduced IC package and connector sizes, and improve overall reliability.
National also will feature other analog products, including new amplifier and audio technologies:
-- Audio amplifiers: With a growing portfolio of more than 100 products,
National's Boomer(R) audio products are the industry's most recognized
name in amplifiers and are used by nearly every cell phone maker in
the world. At CTIA, National will feature its integrated speaker
drivers that allow manufacturers to create "credit-card-thin"
handsets, advanced audio subsystems and a new, high-efficiency Class D
audio amplifier that saves space, extends battery life and reduces
heat.
-- Amp-in-a-Mic: Another first in consumer microphone electronics:
National's technologies enable high-fidelity sound quality directly
inside electret condenser microphones (ECMs). Ideal for handsets and
other audio applications, National will demonstrate its
"digital voice-in-a-mic" products that overcome today's size-and-cost
barriers to implementing high-fidelity voice technology in consumer
products.
-- Phase-locked loops (PLLs) and voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs):
These critical ICs keep cell phones and other communication devices
locked onto a selected channel or frequency for strong, clear,
error-free communication. At CTIA, National will highlight its
PLLatinum(TM) family of integrated monolithic PLL+VCOs, which reduces
the board space required by 67 percent over designs that use discrete
PLL and VCO circuits. These products features low phase noise, fast
lock times and low power consumption.
