Alcatel-Lucent Solution Protects Carrier Networks Against Signaling and SMS Attacks

LAS VEGAS, April 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CTIA Wireless -- Alcatel- Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced today the launch of a first- of-a-kind signaling defense solution to protect wireline and wireless carrier networks from signaling and Short Message Service (SMS) based intrusion.
The Alcatel-Lucent 5074 Signaling Defense System (SDS), now available globally, is the first solution on the market that can be deployed across a carrier's entire network for the protection of its Signaling System Number 7 (SS7) links to other mobile operators. SS7 is a global telecommunications standard that defines the procedures and protocols by which network elements in the public switched telephone network exchange information over a digital signaling network in order to handle wireless and wireline call setup, routing and control, as well as end user's short text messages.
The Alcatel-Lucent 5074 SDS complements the Alcatel-Lucent 9900 Wireless Network Guardian, which detects IP traffic that threatens the performance of wireless data networks. Both products secure wireless carrier networks.
The Alcatel-Lucent 5074 SDS enables a carrier to permit, deny and modify signaling traffic across its network to address the risks associated with widespread interconnection and open access, including phantom traffic, revenue-impacting interoperability issues, SMS spam and hackers.
"We are pleased to provide our customers with a solution that enables operators to take control of all inter- and intra-carrier signaling and SMS traffic to minimize attacks via converged, open access networks," said Dave Geary, president of Alcatel-Lucent's Multicore activities. "Our solution ensures network security, reliability, quality of service and revenue assurance for carriers as they provide customers with universal connectivity."
The solution can be scaled to small or large networks and is transparent on the carrier's network so that operators do not need to re-engineer complex signaling networks.
Alcatel-Lucent believes it is the first equipment provider in the industry to offer a comprehensive SS7 signaling defense solution.
Alcatel-Lucent's 5074 SDS was recently added to its 5070 Signaling Server portfolio with the signing of an exclusive agreement with Sevis Systems, a leading provider of advanced signaling solutions.
About the Alcatel-Lucent 5074 SDS
The Alcatel-Lucent 5074 SDS is a standards-based, carrier grade, multi- application architecture consisting of a platform, a server and a client. It provides advanced signaling security above and beyond traditional gateway screening.
-- Syntax inspection ensures protocol conformance and prevents malformed messages. -- Content inspection validates messages, parameters and parameter values. -- Real-time threshold provides mass call and mass message defense to protect against flooding events and allows the signaling network to carry the maximum amount of traffic without degrading its performance.
