Movidis Introduces Networked Unified Storage Controller Software Package for X16 Network Appliance Platform
Posted on: Monday, 7 April 2008, 09:00 CDT
Movidis, Inc. today announced the availability of Universal Networked Storage (UNS) system for the company's x16 Network Appliance Platform (NAP). The Movidis NAP leverages the OCTEON™ CN38xx and CN58xx 16-core MIPS network processor from Cavium Networks to create an OEM platform that offers unrivaled performance in NFS, Samba, and iSCSI applications. The OCTEON-based NAP is being demonstrated in Cavium Networks' booth #429 at Storage Networking World taking place April 7-10, 2008 at Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orland, Florida.
Storage is growing at a rapid pace, with a recent report from IDC highlighting the adoption of iSCSI alone in the fourth quarter of 2007 at a 74.9% growth rate compared to the prior year's quarter.1 Multi-core MIPS network processors help address the challenges that come from this accelerated growth by enabling servers to move data faster and offering the best performance available on the market today. The new MIPS-based UNS system for the Movidis NAP x16 offers OEMs unparalleled simplicity, cost and performance so that they can bring new storage products to market faster.
The UNS system provides the following functions:
Linux, Debian kernel v2.6.x.x
Network file system (NFS)
Samba
iSCSI target
Logical volume manager (LVM)
Additionally, it offers mdadm RAID management utility, OpenSSH Server, and tcp_wrappers. All of the software supplied in the UNS package ships pre-loaded on the NAP's on-board flash. As a result, building a networked storage system is as easy as installing the standard form factor motherboard in any chassis, and adding disk drives. The main system includes a motherboard, and a SATA/SAS expander, which will allow the NAP to control up to 28 drives. The system can support hundreds of SATA or SAS drives, and be configured to support all networked storage protocols, without sacrificing performance, including the open source management utilities familiar to IT professionals.
"We designed the UNS software to provide two key benefits to OEMs. The first is to enable high performance network applications -- without a custom board or ASIC design. The second is to provide a flexible platform that speeds new products to market," said Ken Goldsholl, CEO of Movidis. "The applications for this software are broad, and the fact that it ships running Linux makes it incredibly easy for users to take advantage of the variety of open source opportunities available today."
Pricing and Availability
The Movidis x16 NAP with the UNS system is available now, with prices starting at $1,499 in OEM quantities, depending on speed and version of the Octeon.

About the Movidis x16 Network Appliance Platform
The Movidis single-board x16 Network Application Platform (NAP) enables the fast development of high performance next generation networking appliances. Based on the Cavium Networks CN3860 OCTEON™ 16-core MIPS64 processor, the Movidis x16 NAP provides OEMs with unequalled performance in a cost-effective, power-stingy design.
With its multi-purpose, powerful design, the Movidis x16 NAP also includes integrated acceleration engines for TCP, encryption, and compression, so that most of the 9.6GHz of processing power can be freed up for your applications -- like network security, encryption, load balancing, WAN optimization and caching, or network access control. The x16 NAP allows you to fully exploit the power of the OCTEON with a 133 MHz/64-bit PCI-X bus, which is connected to an 8-port SATA II/SAS controller and a full speed expansion slot. Eight 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports are provided, along with four sockets for DDR2 registered SDRAM DIMMs. All of these features, and more, fit onto an industry standard extended ATX PCB, so it can be installed in any standard 1U rack mount chassis.
