Kotura, Inc. Licenses Silicon Photonic Patents From Bookham

Posted on: Monday, 7 March 2005, 03:00 CST

Kotura, Inc., a leading provider of silicon photonic components, announced today that it has non-exclusively licensed a portfolio of patents on silicon photonics from California-based Bookham, a leading manufacturer of optical components, modules and subsystems.

The innovative Bookham technology covered by the patents relates to the design and manufacture of silicon waveguide devices such as variable optical attenuators and modulators, and to the construction of multi-functional optical silicon chips. Bookham exited silicon photonics in 2003.

Haydn Jones, Director of IP for Bookham, commented, "Bookham originated many of the early patents in the silicon photonics space. We recognize that silicon technology continues to have great potential and feel that the timing is right for us to license our patents."

Jean-Louis Malinge, CEO of Kotura, stated, "Silicon photonics is emerging as an important technology with broad applications. Kotura has a world-class design team and many patents of our own. Together with the new portfolio of patents from Bookham, we have created a strong base of IP to support our future growth."
