Maritime archaeologists explore the immersed world of a shipwreck using a variety of instruments and technology.

An upcoming lecture sponsored by Massasoit Community College and Stellwagen Bank National Maritime Sanctuary will explain how those tools are used to locate and document shipwrecks in depths from 65 to more than 500 feet of water.

The lecture, "Maritime Archaeology Remote Sensing," is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Stellwagen Bank National Sanctuary, 175 Edward Foster Road, Scituate.

Maritime archaeologists Matthew Lawrence and Deborah Marx will discuss the use of remote sensing technology to explore shipwrecks, including side scan sonar, magnetometers and autonomous underwater vehicles.

They will also describe how sunken vessels are monitored with wireless microwave networks that broadcast live from ship to shore.

The lecture is part of the Scituate Marine Technology Series, presented every Tuesday night through May 6 at the sanctuary.
