Mar. 9--BellSouth has announced its second rate increase since 1991, raising fees for basic phone service 1.5 percent.
The company announced the increases last week in the classified sections of newspapers across the state, including the News Sentinel. BellSouth will file the tariff increases with the Tennessee Regulatory Authority on Friday, according to BellSouth spokeswoman Patsy Hazlewood.
The hikes will increase basic residential rates for customers from Knoxville and most surrounding areas from $12.03 to $12.21. Rates for Halls customers will increase from $7.67 to $7.78. Rates in Morristown will increase from $8.68 to $8.74.
The rate increases go into effect April 1.
There is no rate increase for BellSouth's lower income, Lifeline customers.
