NEC Electronics America Showcases System-Level Demonstration Of PCI Express Technology at Intel Developer Forum Fall 2003

Posted on: Monday, 15 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- NEC Electronics America, Inc. today announced that it will demonstrate one of the industry's first system-level PCI Express(TM) applications at the Intel Developer Forum. Taking place in the PCI Pavilion (Booth #118) of the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose from September 16?18, the demonstration will showcase PCI Express-to-Universal Serial Bus (USB) protocol translation using an NEC USB host controller and PCI Express ASIC general endpoint controller with a development system platform from Intel Corporation.

For the demonstration, NEC Electronics America has implemented a fully integrated, single-chip endpoint controller that contains an endpoint controller core and a transceiver core and gives customers an easy migration path for incorporating application designs onto a general endpoint controller ASIC. The controller, which supports up to x4 lane configurations, is available on NEC Electronics' PCI Express ASIC developer's board for ASIC prototyping and development.

"As a global supplier of PCI Express technology, NEC Electronics has been developing the PCI Express chips, which are fully compliant with the standard spec, to deliver high-speed, high-performance solutions that will meet specific customer needs," said Hiroshi Nakashiba, vice president and general manager, broadband LSI technologies strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. "With our advanced process, latest software and proven design expertise, we believe we can offer all of the elements required to help our customers implement highly integrated system-on-chip solutions that take advantage of the newest interconnect technologies."

NEC Electronics plans to leverage its PCI Express cores to deliver ASSP and ASIC solutions that give customers the benefit of high bandwidth on each pin to enable small form factors, simplify board design and routing, and reduce signal integrity issues.

Formerly known as 3GIO, PCI Express is a third-generation, scalable, input/output (I/O) architecture for use in desktop, mobile, server, communications platform, workstation, and embedded devices. As PC and server CPUs and other I/O devices increase in speed, technologies such as PCI Express will be needed to ensure that interfaces do not create system performance bottlenecks. NEC Electronics offers both a PCI Express transceiver core and a PCI Express endpoint controller that uses a data link layer and transaction layer architecture. NEC Electronics' PCI Express IP cores are compliant with the PCI Express specification (revision 1.0a).

Availability

The NEC Electronics PCI Express IP cores offer support for multiple lane configurations (x1, x4, x8 and so forth) and are currently available.
