SMC’s New DOCSIS(R) 3.0-Based Cable Modems Underscore Commitment to MSOs: Residential and Business Solutions That Stress Ease and Performance
SMC Networks (www.smc.com) today announced the newest in its family of broadband connectivity solutions to provide fast, easy, supportable broadband connectivity for MSO customers: the SMCD3CM DOCSIS® 3.0-based Cable Modem for High-Speed Broadband Networking and the SMCD3BCM Business-Class DOCSIS 3.0-based Cable Modem for High-Speed Broadband Networking. Expected to be available in late May, the SMCD3CM and SMCD3BCM are currently undergoing testing by CableLabs® for certification under its CableLabs® Certified™ Cable Modem project, known as DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). A third product, the SMCD3G DOCSIS 3.0-based Cable Gateway for High-Speed Broadband Networking that builds on the same technology, but adds robust features that meet the needs of the commercial market, is in the final stages of development. Samples of the SMCD3G Cable Gateway will be available in May.
“MSOs are looking for new ways to achieve high-speed data distribution with cost-effective broadband gateway solutions,” said Todd Babic, SMC Networks Vice President of Sales, Broadband Business Development for North America. “These new SMC broadband solutions enable them to do just that with products that meet the specific needs of their residential, small business and commercial customers.”
The SMCD3CM DOCSIS 3.0-based Cable Modem provides high-speed data distribution via a Gigabit Ethernet port to optimize speed and bandwidth for both residential and SOHO users. Supporting all DOCSIS 3.0 specifications, the SMCD3CM takes advantage of the advanced technology of DOCSIS 3.0 with asymmetrical connections for performance, operating on as many as four downstream and four upstream bonded channels for extremely high performance and throughput; it also supports IPV4 and IPV6, and is backward-compatible with DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 for flexibility. The SMCD3BCM DOCSIS 3.0-based Cable Modem for High-Speed Broadband Networking builds on the features of the SMCD3CM, adding more features that work for businesses, including support for IPs and RIPs. The commercial-focused SMCD3G gateway adds further robust features, including static IP, firewall, NAT, VPN termination and a full-featured CLI. Easy installation software with LEDs and GUI troubleshooting, CLI and remote management for advanced troubleshooting, and an architecture designed to allow remote software/firmware upgrades–without hardware changes–make all three of the new SMC Broadband solutions as easy for MSOs to manage as it is for their clients.
“With the launch of these newest cable modems and gateway, the SMCD3CM, SMCD3BCM and SMCD3G, SMC is ensuring that our customers continue to have access to latest standards-based hardware technology, with the value-add software features that have positioned SMC as market leader–and that enable our customers, the MSOs to derive new revenue streams that help them to achieve their ARPU goals,” added Babic.
SMC Networks will begin shipping the SMCD3CM and SMCD3BCM cable modems in May 2008. Samples of the SMCD3G Gateway will also be available in May. SMC Networks will demonstrate its full line of products at Interop Las Vegas 2008, April 28-May 2, in their booth 1083 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
About SMC Networks Broadband Development Group
SMC Networks, Inc. has been a leader in the field of standards-based networking for more than twenty years. Its Broadband Development Group focuses that experience and talent on the needs of the Broadband MSO market. Already an approved cable gateway vendor to eight of the top ten MSOs in the United States, SMC’s success in today’s highly-competitive cable CPE market is based upon its focus on customer partnership and on product development that meets partner-customers’ specific needs rather than delivering products driven by retail forces.
The cable/broadband provision business is a service business, and the best way to deliver service is to work with specialist partners who share the same commitment. As a result of its strong, talented development teams and customer focus, SMC developed a business model that enables it to offer niche products with a richness of features and value-adds for specific cable submarkets–products that deliver new revenue streams and stymie churn–without requiring huge volume buys. And it doesn’t stop at the buy. SMC provides end-to-end support, including customized installation training guides, onsite train-the-trainer, 24×7 support, buffer inventory and dedicated Sales Engineers. Most importantly, SMC products are guaranteed to be as affordable as they are robust and fully supported.
