New 16-Bit Microcontrollers from Fujitsu Microelectronics America for LCD Display Control
Posted on: Tuesday, 16 September 2003, 06:00 CDT
SUNNYVALE, Calif. and BOSTON, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A new set of 16-bit microcontrollers from Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) is designed for use in Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) drivers for advanced audio-visual equipment.
The four new members of Fujitsu's MB90800 series have been developed specifically for LCD panels that must be able to display large segment counts. The MCUs can drive LCD segments comprised of as many as 192 discrete elements or 27 numerical digits, providing expanded capacity compared with other 16-bit controllers. The MCUs will be introduced at the fall Embedded Systems Conference in Boston, September 16-17.
"Increased LCD display segment requirements and lower CPU power requirements must be provided in a single device," said Keith Horn, FMA's vice president of marketing. "Achieving this performance requires a new series of controllers that deliver new levels of processing power and panel design flexibility. This new set achieves those objectives."
The four versions include the MB90F804-101 and MB90F804-201, which incorporate 16Kbytes RAM and 256 Kbytes Flash; and the MB90803 and MB90803S, which provide 4 Kbytes RAM and 128 Kbytes ROM. Each operates at 25 MHz, requires a power supply of 3.0V to 3.6V, and delivers a minimum instruction execution time of just 40 nanoseconds at frequencies of 6.25MHz external, or 25 MHz internal.
The LCD controller supports 48 segments x 4 character lines for a maximum of 192 segments, and also includes two-channel UART, two-channel serial I/O interface, and single-channel I2C bus interface. A 12-channel A/D converter also is on board all four versions, along with a complete set of timers and standby modes for maximum power conservation.
Pricing and Availability
The new MCUs come in 100-pin plastic quad flat packs. Prices for the MB90F804-101 and MB90F804-201 start at $12.31 each in 10,000-unit quantities; prices for the MB90803 and MB90803S start at $5.76 each in 50,000 units.
