Transition Networks Expands Power-Over-Ethernet Switch Portfolio

Interop -- Transition Networks Inc., the switching and conversion technology expert, a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc. (AMEX: JCS), today announced the introduction of a new 8-Port Gigabit Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switch. This product expands Transition Networks' Milan portfolio of multilayer switching products, enabling customers to easily supply power to powered devices (PD), such as wireless access points and voice over IP phones, which are capable of handling speeds up to Gigabit Ethernet. In addition, the 8-port switch includes a fan-less design, making it a perfect fit for all environments from the board room to the server room.

Product Features

The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA is a web-managed Gigabit PoE switch that is designed to deliver performance and control to your network. It has 7 x 10/100/1000Base-T ports with 1 x 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 / Gigabit SFP combo port. All of the RJ-45 ports support IEEE 802.3af standard for Power over Ethernet. Auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDI-X are also standard on all of the RJ-45 ports. The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA has jumbo frame support up to 9.6Kbytes. The switch includes front LEDs for easy "at-a-glance" troubleshooting in addition to a web-based management interface as well as supporting SNMP v1 and v2c.

The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA provides a wide range of advanced features including flow control, broadcast storm suppression, CoS priority queuing and multicast filtering. Some of the management features of the MIL-SM8TAF1GPA are listed below:

 --  Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) -- The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA's eight RJ-45 ports     support the IEEE 802.3af PoE standard. A maximum PoE power budget for the     switch is defined so that power can be centrally managed, preventing     overload conditions at the power source. Additionally, port one can be     configured to provide as much as 25 watts of power when set to "High" mode.      --  Configuration Backup and Restore -- This feature allows users to save     the current configuration settings to a file on the web management station     and later use the file to restore the switch configuration settings if     required.      --  Authentication -- The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA supports port-based user     authentication via the IEEE 802.1X protocol.      --  Port Configuration -- This element allows customers to manually     configure the speed, duplex mode and flow control used on specific ports or     use auto-negotiation to detect the connection settings used by the attached     device.      --  Port Mirroring -- The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA can unobtrusively mirror traffic     from any port to a monitor port.      --  Port Trunking -- Ports can be combined into an aggregate connection.     Trunks can be manually setup or dynamically configured using IEEE 802.3ad     Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA supports up to     4 trunks.      --  Broadcast Storm Control -- Broadcast suppression prevents broadcast     traffic from overwhelming the network.      --  Static Addresses -- A static address can be assigned to a specific     interface on the switch.      --  IEEE 802.1D Bridge -- The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA supports IEEE 802.1D     transparent bridging.      --  Store-and-Forward Switching -- This feature prevents bad frames from     entering the network and wasting bandwidth.      --  Virtual LANs (VLANs) -- The MIL-SM8TAF1GPA supports up to 64 VLANs.     IEEE 802.1Q and port based VLANs are supported.
