Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon to Double 300-MM Wafer Output

Tokyo, March 16 (Jiji Press)--Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon Corp. said Wednesday that it will double its production capacity for 300- millimeter silicon wafers to 600,000 units per month by summer of 2008 to meet growing demand.
Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon, a fifty-fifty joint venture between Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. and Mitsubishi Materials Corp. , said that it will boost production at its plant in Imari, Saga Prefecture, southwestern Japan.
Investment for the capacity increase will total 80 billion yen.
Previously, the company said it would raise the capacity to 400,000 units a month by summer of 2006. Because of the growing demand, however, it decided to expand the capacity further.END
