3 From Amherst Among Students Advancing to SkillsUSA Nationals
Three Amherst High School seniors enrolled in technical programs at Harkness Career and Technical Center, Erie 1 Board of Cooperative Educational Services, in Cheektowaga will head to national competition in Kansas City, Mo., next month after winning a state title last week.
Frankie Butera earned first place in the Internet-working category at the SkillsUSA state competition. He is enrolled in Joseph McNamara’s Cisco II class at the BOCES center.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that supports students preparing for careers in skilled occupations. The organization holds local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills.
Colton Miller and Nicholas Green were awarded first place for their 3-D visualization and animation project.
Miller and Green are enrolled in Peter Morath’s Computer Aided Design II class.
Other students at the center who won recognition are Steven Contrino, a senior from Lancaster High School, second place in carpentry; Wayla Wagar, a senior from Williamsville North High, second place in basic health care; and Dylan Grabowski, a junior from Kenmore East High School, third place in technical drafting.
Students from the Erie 1 BOCES Kenton Career and Technical Center in the Town of Tonawanda winning awards include the team of Emily Barone of Kenmore East, Amanda Carlini of Kenmore West, and Candace Johnson and Brittany Keser of Tonawanda High. They took second place in the Health Knowledge Bowl.
The team of Tristen LaBarre of Grand Island High and Jourdan Woodward of Kenmore West took third for their Community Service presentation about Buffalo’s Central Terminal.
More than 5,000 students will compete in 87 occupational and leadership skill areas at the national SkillsUSA championships.
